Next Generation 2016 Toyota Fortuner Spied Testing In Thailand

Toyota has commenced testing the next generation Fortuner in Thailand and images of the test mule give us a glimpse of the upcoming model. The spy shots of the next-gen Fortuner come one day after the next generation Innova was spotted testing near the company’s Bidadi plant, with both the models scheduled to launch in 2016. Sharing its platform with the Hilux internationally, Toyota has been testing the Fortuner across different markets and is most likely to bring the SUV at the 2016 Auto Expo.

The next generation Toyota Fortuner is based on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform that will also underpin the 2016 Innova MPV and Hilux pickup models. The automaker will continue to use the ladder-frame chassis, instead of a monocoque setup, as the former has proved to be more durable, rugged and reliable; the key attributes that Fortuner owners swear by. However, the ladder frame setup will be significantly lighter than the outgoing version in favour of better performance and improved fuel efficiency.

As the images indicatem the 2016 Toyota Fortuner retains the wide body appeal and continues with similar dimensions as the outgoing model. However, the next generation model will be given a more upmarket appearance, in conjunction to the design language seen on the LC200 and Land Cruiser Prado. Expect to see a big and wide two-slat chrome grille, while the headlight cluster will be sharper and more angular than the current generation model. At the rear, expect to see wraparound tail lights sporting LEDs, reminiscent of the upmarket Lexus SUVs. The overall design will receive an overhaul with significant updates to the interiors. The SUV will sport a longer wheelbase.

The next generation Toyota Fortuner will receive a power bump from the same 3.0-litre D4-D diesel engine. Even though the current generation model produces 171 PS, the Fortuner isn’t exactly quick, courtesy of the two tonne weight. However, the improved power and torque levels should surely help the capable SUV be a brisk performer on the roads. Transmissions options are expected to be a 5-speed manual and an automatic unit from the outgoing model; nonetheless, a 6-speed automatic would be more desirable though. Like the outgoing model, the Fortuner will be offered with four-wheel drive and two-wheel drive options.
