Volkswagen has finally decided to introduce the new Polo in 2021 with an all-new successor based on the MQB A0 IN platform in what will be an eventful year for the firm.
It would be an understatement to say that the Polo has been around for a while in India. Some might even find cave paintings about that car due to its prolonged existence.
The brand decided not to replace the premium hatchback with a successor in India a few years ago citing costs, as the market was not ready to shell out over a million rupees for a car of its size.
Now though, things have changed and the German automaker seems to have been encouraged by the fact that Hyundai is charging around Rs. 11 lakhs (ex-showroom) for top variants of its i20.
Thus, Volkswagen feels it can now justify the cost of its own premium hatchback and put it on sale in India as early as this year. The current Polo on sale will co-exist with the new generation model.
At present, the manufacturer is working on its Taigun compact SUV and the next-generation Vento. It is evident that the 2021 Volkswagen Polo would share a lot of parts with the Vento, an example set by the current-generation model.
Engine and gearboxes, suspension components, switchgear are all likely to be common, and being a Volkswagen, the new Polo should come with styling that will let the car age well.
In addition to this new development, we have also learnt that the brand will be unveiling its fourth SUV for India by March. Nope, it is not the upcoming Taigun, but another model.
Also, this being the age of introduction of EVs, the carmaker is also working towards showcasing an EV for India at the 2022 Auto Expo. Good times ahead for Volkswagen then.
