Next gen Maruti Alto will get a fresh new platform having a crossover inspired styling and it might come with a mild petrol hybrid engine.
While Maruti Suzuki is celebrating their humongous market share of almost 50 percent in India, their largest selling car, Alto is feeling some heat from the competition. With the launch of the Renault Kwid, the Alto’s market share came down to 40 percent from 48 percent. The carmaker is now working on the next gen Alto to regain the lost market share.
Internally codenamed Y1K, the next generation Maruti Alto is likely to be launched during the festive season of 2019. The entry-level hatchback will be based on an all-new platform that will meet the new regulations. The carmaker plans to make it look attractive with crossover inspired proportions just like Renault did with the Kwid.
The new Maruti Alto will get its hardware and technology from the parent company Suzuki. However, the engineering, design and validation will be done by the Indian subsidiary keeping in mind the local inputs. Maruti is considering to introduce a mild hybrid petrol engine for the Alto which will take the fuel efficiency game to the next level.
Maruti Suzuki plans to launch 15 new cars in India within the next three years. To make their hatchback portfolio even stronger, they will also revamp the Maruti Celerio and the Maruti Wagon R codenamed YCA and YNC respectively. The new gen Celerio and Wagon R models will be launched before 2020. Maruti aims to intensify their product and network development in India.
