The fourth generation Honda City which made its debut in 2014 with a diesel engine for the first time in India was an instant success. Honda is currently working on its fifth generation of the City, which is most likely to hit the Indian market by 2020. The next gen City is expected to have a sharper design and more premium materials on the interiors.

There will be upgrades to the diesel engine on the next gen of the City to pass the BS-VI norms. The petrol engine in the City will also be upgraded simultaneously for mild hybrid tech. The company has already started road testing of the BS-VI ready engine on the Indian soil.

The next gen Honda City is also expected to come with a diesel CVT option just like the new Honda Amaze. With this diesel CVT option, the City can take on the rivals that currently have a diesel automatic advantage. When launched, it will face a strong competition from the Maruti Ciaz, which is also expected to get an updated diesel engine for BS-VI.
