Swedish carmaker Volvo has readied a fierce looking coupe concept. The project in the concept phase will be called as the Concept Coupe. The car speaks both modern and a retro through its design language. This concept is one among the three cars that will be based on Volvo’s new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform. The design is an inspiration from Volvo’s classic coupe P1800 which was launched in 1960. The Concept Coupe is also the first project under the brand’s new design chief Thomas Ingenlath. The excerpts from the iconic P1800 have been given a modern dynamic touch spanning through the company’s past to give identity to today’s Volvo.
The Volvo Concept Coupe is a hybrid at heart using a 2.0-litre, supercharged high performance petrol engine driving the front wheels. The electric motor on the other hand is driving the rear axle. The combined power output of the hybrid system is around 400 BHP of power and 600 Nm of torque. The interiors of this two-seater coupe seem extremely futuristic and feature loaded. The elements are beautifully crafted all around the interior with stitched leather, wood panels and steel inserts.
Whether it will make it to production or not is yet to be revealed by Volvo. The Concept Coupe is more of a display of the flexibility and capability of their new SPA architecture. The SPA architecture is versatile and allows more freedom in design than the previous platform. A similar design language will be incorporated in the new Volvo XC90. The Concept Coupe will be unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show to be held next month.
