Toyota is developing a new SUV and a new MPV and both the cars are likely to get a hybrid powertrain.
Toyota has a very strong hold of the MPV and SUV segments in India with the Innova Crysta and Fortuner. The Japanese automaker has dominated these segments since more than a decade now, right from the days of the Qualis to the old Innova and old Fortuner.
The company is now said to be developing 2 new products, an MPV and an SUV and these will be slotted below the Innova Crysta and Fortuner respectively. Toyota’s C MPV architecture is in the final stages of approval and could be launched by 2022-23.
The new SUV will be light and fuel efficient and it is expected to carry a price tag between Rs. 15-20 lakhs. The vehicles will use a monocoque or unibody construction and will come with a pure hybrid powertrain.
The new platform is likely to be shared with Maruti Suzuki too and the new MPV has the possibility of being sold as a rebadged Maruti. The new MPV will comply with the CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) norms.
