New Mahindra Scorpio Automatic Spotted On Test, Launch In Mid-2015

The new-generation Mahindra Scorpio Automatic has been caught testing and is expected to be launched in the middle of this year.

The Scorpio Automatic will most likely be offered only on the top-end S10 variant

The Scorpio has been the highest selling SUV in India and is a very important vehicle for Mahindra for quite some time now due to the same reason. Mahindra had updated the 12-year old Scorpio towards the end of last year with a slew of changes made both mechanically and visually. The new generation Scorpio is available in a total of 6 variants – S2, S4, S6, S6 Plus, S8 and S10. The SUV is powered by the previously existing 2.5-litre diesel engine producing 75 BHP and 220 Nm of torque for the base S2 variant, while all other trims are powered by the 2.2-litre mHawk unit that produces 120 BHP and 290 Nm of torque.

It now seems that the Nashik based Indian manufacturer is planning to launch an automatic variant of the Scorpio. The vehicle was recently caught with an ‘Automatic’ badge undergoing testing. Currently, the Mahindra Scorpio is only available with a 5-speed manual transmission. The Scorpio with an automatic gearbox caught on test is based on the top S10 variant and the same is likely to be launched somewhere in the middle of this year and will most likely cost about Rs. 1 lakh more than its manual counterpart.

Mahindra will not just look at offering the automatic variant in our country, but will be looking to export it to other countries as well. The automatic transmission is expected to be a 6-speed self-shifting gearbox, with a similar looking gear stick as found on the previous generation Scorpio automatic. When launched, the Scorpio will become the only 7-seater SUV offered with an automatic transmission in the price bracket of Rs. 11-20 lakhs in India. The new generation Scorpio sees various improvements over its predecessor and looks more fresh, has way better interiors with more equipment on offer. The SUV has also improved dynamically and the car drives much better than before. The availability of an automatic variant will only add to the sales of the already successful Mahindra Scorpio.
