New gen Toyota Fortuner and Hilux to get new hybrid engines
Toyota will reveal the new gen Fortuner and Hilux next year. Toyota South Africa has confirmed that the Japanese carmaker has plans to introduce a hybrid version of the popular Hilux and Fortuner models. This move aligns with the automaker’s global strategy to embrace new energy vehicles (NEVs) while catering to specific market needs.
Leon Theron, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at TSAM, confirmed that the company has plans to introduce a hybrid Hilux and Fortuner to the local lineup. These new models are expected to be available as mild hybrid derivatives.
Toyota’s decision to explore a “multi-pathway approach” to NEVs and conventional models is a strategic move aimed at meeting the diverse needs of different markets. Instead of solely focusing on electrification, this approach ensures that the company tailors its products to specific market requirements for emerging markets in Africa, South America and Asia.
By offering mild hybrid variants of the Hilux and Fortuner, Toyota aims to strike a balance between environmental consciousness and meeting the demands of customers who prefer internal combustion engines.
Both the new vehicles are likely to be based on Toyota’s TNGA-F platform. This platform can incorporate both ICE and hybrid powertrains. The new vehicles in India will most likely get a 2.8-litre diesel mild hybrid engine.
The Japanese carmaker might consider introducing strong hybrid engines too in the Fortuner and Hilux in the future.
