New generation Suzuki Alto to make its debut by 2026, to get a complete redesign
Suzuki is gearing up to introduce the 10th-generation Alto in Japan by 2026. With a history dating back to its debut in 1979, the Alto has evolved significantly over nine generations, the latest of which was launched in 2021. The upcoming model will focus on achieving a lighter profile, improved fuel efficiency and enhanced performance while adhering to modern safety standards.
Focus on Lightweight Construction
A key highlight of the 10th-gen Alto will be its significant weight reduction. Reports suggest that the new model will shed around 100 kg compared to the current Alto, which weighs between 680 kg and 760 kg. This would bring the weight of the new Alto to a range of 580 kg to 660 kg. Interestingly, this is similar to the weight of the third-generation Alto, which debuted in an era when cars lacked many of today’s safety features.
Achieving such a reduction in weight while maintaining safety and structural integrity is challenging. To address this, Suzuki will leverage an advanced version of its Heartect platform. This platform employs ultra-high tensile and advanced high tensile steel (UHSS & AHSS), materials that offer a blend of lightweight construction and high strength. Additionally, the design incorporates optimised crumple zones to absorb impact energy effectively.
Suzuki also plans to minimize the use of plastic components in the 10th-gen Alto, further contributing to weight reduction while enhancing the car’s sustainability credentials.
Enhanced Fuel Efficiency and Emissions Reduction
One of the primary goals for the 10th-gen Alto is achieving greater fuel efficiency. The current model in Japan offers 25.2 km/l for the petrol variant and 27.7 km/l for the mild-hybrid version. The new Alto is expected to improve on these figures, potentially crossing the 30 km/l mark.
Suzuki is likely to achieve this with a 48V mild-hybrid system, an upgrade from the existing 12V setup. This advanced system, termed “Super Ene Charge,” will include a lightweight battery and a more powerful 10-kW electric motor, contributing up to 30% of the vehicle’s overall power delivery. This setup will not only enhance fuel efficiency but also provide improved performance.
Balancing Safety and Efficiency
Incorporating modern safety features while reducing weight presents a challenge, as safety equipment typically adds to a vehicle’s mass. However, Suzuki’s Heartect platform and innovative material choices aim to strike this balance effectively. By prioritising both safety and lightweight construction, Suzuki seeks to address the evolving demands of consumers and regulators alike.
Expected Pricing
The current Suzuki Alto in Japan is priced at 1,068,000 yen (approximately Rs. 5.83 lakhs) for the petrol model and 1,218,800 yen (approximately Rs. 6.65 lakhs) for the mild-hybrid variant. The new Alto is expected to start at around 1 million yen (approximately Rs. 5.46 lakhs), making it a competitive offering in its segment.
With its lighter design, enhanced efficiency and advanced hybrid technology, the 10th-generation Suzuki Alto aims to redefine small cars’ standards in Japan. As one of Suzuki’s flagship kei cars, the new Alto will continue the legacy of offering a practical, economical and sustainable solution for urban commuting. While the official launch is still a few years away, the anticipated improvements suggest that the new Alto will be a significant milestone in the model’s long history.
