New FASTag Rules: Key Changes & What You Need To Know

Toll Plaza Payment

Check out the new FASTag rules and key changes important for you to note

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has rolled out a set of new rules for FASTag users, effective 1st August 2024. These updates aim to enhance the efficiency, security and transparency of toll payments across India’s highways and expressways. Here’s a breakdown of the key changes and what they mean for vehicle owners.

Mandatory KYC Update Every Three Years

One of the significant changes introduced by the NPCI is the requirement for FASTag users to update their KYC information every three years. This update is mandatory and aims to keep user information current and accurate. The deadline for updating KYC information for existing FASTags is set for 31st October, 2024. Users who fail to comply may find their accounts blocked, rendering their FASTags unusable.

Replacement of Five-Year-Old FASTags

Another critical change concerns the validity of FASTags. FASTags that are five years old or older will no longer be valid. Users with such tags will need to replace them with new ones to continue enjoying seamless toll payments. This move is part of an effort to upgrade the technical and security aspects of the toll collection system.

Double Toll for Vehicles Without FASTag

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has reinforced its rule that vehicles without a FASTag affixed to the windshield will be charged double the toll fee. This rule is designed to encourage the use of FASTags and reduce congestion at toll plazas, thus streamlining the toll collection process.

One Vehicle, One FASTag Rule

In a measure introduced earlier in April 2024, the NHAI implemented the “One Vehicle, One FASTag” rule. This regulation prohibits the issuance of multiple FASTags for a single vehicle, a step taken to prevent fraudulent activities and ensure a more streamlined toll collection system.

Additional Security Measures

To prevent the misuse of FASTags, users are now required to provide clear photographs of their vehicle, including the front and side views, as well as a clear image of the FASTag itself. This measure aims to verify the authenticity of the FASTag and the associated vehicle. Additionally, users must link the FASTag to the owner’s mobile number. This linkage facilitates better and faster communication between FASTag providers and users, ensuring prompt updates and notifications.

These new rules and updates enhance the efficiency, security and user experience of the FASTag system. Vehicle owners are encouraged to comply with these regulations to avoid disruptions and benefit from a smoother toll payment process. Apart from this, the government is working on satellite based toll collection system. The new toll collection system will eradicate toll booths, offering seamless travel experience on Indian highway to save fuel and time.
