Apart from an all new SUV, the company has a couple of products lined up for updates too.
Datsun hasn’t really experienced a runaway success since they entered the Indian market in 2014. This is largely due to their unhurried nature of updating their cars. But if reports are to be believed, this is largely going to change as Datsun has an all-new SUV (likely to be the GO Cross) and a few product updates ready to be launched in India.
The highlight is obviously the SUV that Datsun will be launching. It will be priced under the Rs. 10 lakh mark and is touted to be a killer product. The size of the SUV will be under 4-metres in length which will put it in a lower tax bracket and help the company price it competitively. The sub 4-metre length also means that it will be more of a crossover than a proper SUV.
The SUV will get only a single petrol engine option. This will be a turbocharged version of the 1.0-litre motor that currently powers the Datsun redi-GO. The SUV will most likely be based on the CMF-A platform which has been jointly developed by Renault and Nissan. Nissan wants to use the Datsun brand name to launch their products under Rs. 10 lakhs while all the products above that price will branded as Nissan models.
Datsun will also be refreshing their GO and GO+ models for the upcoming festive season. To give these cars a premium touch, the company will add a new touchscreen and new front seats in the car. The main focus though will be on safety and the cars are set to get upgrades like ABS and dual airbags. Fitting the cars with Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC, aka electronic stability control) is also on the cards making these the first cars in their segments to get this safety technology.
Lastly, their small car, the redi-GO will get a special edition variant and the company seems to be very optimistic about this edition as well as the successor, work on which has begun. With so many cars in the pipeline, Datsun clearly doesn’t want to keep any stones unturned but will sales increase? Only time will tell.
