FCA wants to be an SUV-only brand in the foreseeable future in India.
FCA has announced that the company will produce 2-3 Jeep models from the Ranjangaon facility near Pune, Maharashtra, from 2021. The American company also intends to bring its iconic rand Wrangler Rubicon to the Indian market in the first half of 2020. It is expected to be priced over Rs. 72 lakhs and claims to be sold out for months.
FCA had introduced the locally manufactured Jeep Compass in July 2017 at a starting price of Rs. 14.95 lakhs. As per the company, over 50,000 Jeep Compass models are running on the road. The brand has even shipped as many as 17,000 units to around 15 key right-hand drive markets, including Britain, Japan and Australia. Having said that, FCA has seen its volume plunge by around 30% from its 2018 peak.
Despite being in such a heterogeneous market like India, FCA wants to be an SUV-only brand in the foreseeable future with no plans to roll out any luxury hatchback or sedans in the country.
From its CBU (completely built units) stable, the Jeep Wrangler has been the best-seller among all accounting for 67% of the volume, since its entry into the domestic market in August 2016.
As for the BS6 transition, the entire range of the Jeep Compass has been moved to the new emission norms and the brand claims to have no inventory issue with the BS4 models at all.
The BS6 Compass comes at a higher price tag of 5-7% or Rs. 25,000/- to Rs. 1,10,000/- depending on the model.
