MG Windsor EV Launched, Priced From Rs. 9.99 Lakhs + Battery Rental

MG Windsor EV is available in three variants – Excite, Exclusive & Essence

MG Windsor EV launched with an introductory price of Rs. 9.99 lakhs (ex-showroom) along with Rs. 3.5 per km battery rental. The Windsor is the company’s third electric offering after the ZS EV and the Comet, and it marks MG’s first product in India since its partnership with JSW was announced earlier this year.

Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) Model

One of the most distinctive offering of the Windsor is its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) option, where the battery is not included in the car’s base price. Instead, buyers pay Rs. 3.5 per km for battery usage. MG claims this model reduces the vehicle’s initial cost, making electric vehicle ownership more accessible. The company believes this approach can also lower per-kilometre expenses for customers.

Launch Timeline

Bookings for the Windsor will officially open on 3rd October, with deliveries scheduled to begin on 12th October. Test drives will commence from 25th September. The Windsor is available in three trims – Excite, Exclusive and Essence. It comes in four colour options – Starburst Black, Pearl White, Clay Beige and Turquoise Green.

Design and Exterior Features

The MG Windsor follows a minimalist design language, typical of MPVs, but its five-seater configuration gives it the appearance of an enlarged hatchback. Design highlights include flush door handles, clean surfaces and full-width LED light bars at both ends. The stepped front-end design with headlamps positioned on the bumper lends the Windsor a unique aesthetic.

It features a large glasshouse that wraps around the rear and includes extended quarter glass sections, while chrome accents adorn the windows, door sills and bumpers. The Windsor rides on 18-inch alloy wheels with a sleek 5-spoke design.

Interior and Technology

Inside, the Windsor continues the theme of minimalism, with the cabin finished in black with copper highlights. The dashboard is dominated by a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system and there’s a free-floating 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster. The aero lounge seats offer a 135-degree recline, enhancing comfort.

Practical features include physical HVAC controls, a notable addition for the Indian market, given that international versions rely on touchscreen inputs for all in-cabin controls. The Windsor also boasts wireless connectivity for both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless phone charging, rear AC vents and ventilated front seats. Additionally, it comes equipped with a 9-speaker Infinity sound system, panoramic glass roof, and ambient lighting.

Safety and Convenience

The Windsor’s safety features include six airbags, ABS with EBD, all four disk brakes, ESC and a 360-degree camera. The vehicle also has front and rear parking sensors.

Powertrain and Battery Specifications

The MG Windsor is powered by a 38kWh LFP battery with prismatic cells, offering a claimed range of 331 km on a single charge. The motor, mounted on the front axle, delivers 136 HP and 200 Nm of torque. The Windsor also comes with four driving modes – Eco+, Eco, Normal and Sport.

MG states that the Windsor supports 45kW fast charging, allowing the battery to charge from 0 to 80 percent in 55 minutes. It also offers 3.3kW and 7.7kW AC chargers, with the latter capable of charging the battery fully in approximately 6.5 hours.

Warranty and Additional Benefits

For early adopters, MG is offering a lifetime battery warranty with no mileage limit. Buyers will also receive one year of free public charging, making the Windsor a more attractive option for those looking to transition to electric mobility.

Overall, the MG Windsor presents an innovative ownership model with its battery rental system, aimed at reducing upfront costs and easing EV adoption in the Indian market.
