MG Motor India has planned to launch its second electric vehicle in India by 2022-end and it will cost under Rs. 20 lakhs.
President and MD, MG Motor India, Rajeev Chaba, has revealed that the model (expected to be a compact EV and likely to rival the Nexon EV from Tata) will be launched by the end of next calendar year.
While nothing is known about the new MG EV, it might be based on the automaker’s GS compact SUV, which is currently on sale overseas.
In December 2020, MG received 200 bookings, the highest till date, for the ZS EV and Chaba said the car’s sales is expected to double to 2500 units this year as Indians are warming up to the concept of owning battery electric vehicles.
Two years ago, EV sales stood at 1000 units in India, while last year, even with a disruptive pandemic, 5000 EVs were sold in the nation. The figure is only expected to further rise this year.
Apart from expanding its electric car portfolio in the country, the SAIC-owned automaker is also focusing on developing a battery pack that can effectively provide a car with 500 km range.
The company will also invest its resources with Tata Power to create a network of superfast chargers in the country. By the end of this year, the firm plans to have 30-40 superchargers here.
Further, MG is working with financial institutions so as to come up with solutions for subscription-based ownership of EVs, in order to help customers adapt to such vehicles.
It was only yesterday that the firm launched the MG Hector facelift and the Hector Plus 7-seater in India (click here to read article) and with it announcing its intention to launch 1 more EV, one can only say that interesting times lie ahead for the carmaker.
