MG Motor will kick start their India innings with a C-segment SUV that will get petrol and diesel engine options.
MG Motor will start selling their vehicles in the Indian market in the second quarter of 2019. The automaker will first launch a C-segment SUV which will be an India specific model. This vehicle will get 75% localised content to keep the pricing competitive. The SUV will be bigger in size than the Honda CR-V and it will rival the Jeep Compass and Hyundai Tucson.
The upcoming MG Motor SUV will be offered with a choice of both petrol and diesel engines. The company will be starting off with 45 dealers and 100 touchpoints across India. The automaker has stated that the vehicle will get segment best features and technology too.
Cars will be manufactured at the Halol plant which earlier belonged to General Motors. It is being changed to incorporate a vendor park and global vendors will be accommodated here. SAIC group companies will come to India for figuring out the vendors, logistics, etc. SAIC Finance Company is also likely to arrive in India. MG have also stated that their vehicles will meet 5-star safety norms.
SAIC has two passenger car brands under their umbrella – MG Motor and Roewe. The latter brand is used only in China but cars from either brands can be launched in India but only under the MG Motor name. SAIC will put MG styling and DNA in their India models and one of the 5 platforms available for India could be the joint platform with GM, VW, Wuling-Baojun or MG-Roewe.
