MG expects EV sales to jump from 7 percent this year to 20 percent in the next 2 years
MG Motor India which will launch its second electric vehicle (EV) in the country by March 2023 expects its battery-powered cars to make up for 20 percent of its overall sales in the next 2 years.
The company currently sells the ZS EV that is priced between Rs. 21 lakhs and Rs. 24.68 lakhs (ex-showroom) here. The car averages 700 bookings a month, has found 3838 homes since launch and contributed to 7 percent of MG’s sales in 2021.
While this figure is low in the grand scheme of things, the company sold 37,723 units in the January-November 2021 period as opposed to 24,152 units it retailed during the same period last year, MG expects that to change with the arrival of its second EV.
This new model will be positioned below the ZS EV, cost between Rs. 10 lakhs and Rs. 15 lakhs (ex-showroom) and rival the Tata Nexon EV. It will be based on a global platform customised to meet Indian needs.
The car should come packed with features and in order to be able to price its upcoming EV aggressively, which is necessary for MG EV sales to be high, the Chinese-owned car brand is looking to achieve high localisation levels.
Presently, MG Motor India has begun exporting the Hector made at its factory in Halol, Gujarat to Nepal. The brand aims to expand its footprint across other South Asian countries soon.
