MG Cyberster to be imported to India directly via CBU route

MG Motor India has officially announced the launch of its first electric sportscar, the MG Cyberster, scheduled for January 2025. This highly anticipated model will also mark the debut of the automaker’s new premium retail channel, MG Select, which will cater to its high-end offerings.

Cyberster: MG’s Entry into Electric Sports Cars

The MG Cyberster, first unveiled in concept form in 2021 and making its global debut at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed, will be sold in India as a completely built-up unit. This cutting-edge electric roadster is based on a dedicated electric platform and boasts dimensions of 4533 mm in length, 1912 mm in width and 1328 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2689 mm.

The Cyberster will offer two powertrain options globally:

Single-motor version: Equipped with a 64kWh battery, it produces 308 HP and offers a claimed range of 520 km (CLTC-rated). Dual-motor version: Featuring a larger 77kWh battery, it delivers a combined 544 HP and 725 Nm, with a range of 580 km (CLTC-rated).
MG Motor India is yet to confirm which of these configurations will be available in the Indian market.

MG Select: A Premium Retail Experience

The Cyberster will be the first model to be sold under MG’s Select premium retail chain, which aims to provide an enhanced customer experience for the brand’s flagship models. JSW MG Motor India initially plans to open 12 MG Select experience centres across the country, with more outlets to follow.

MG has positioned the Cyberster as a premium offering, with prices expected to range between Rs. 50 lakhs and Rs. 60 lakhs (ex-showroom). Although the Cyberster does not have a direct competitor in India’s electric sportscar segment, it will likely be compared with high-end EVs like the BYD Seal, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, which fall within a similar price bracket.

Broader Strategy: Mifa MPV to Follow

Following the Cyberster’s launch, MG plans to expand its MG Select portfolio with the Mifa electric MPV, another high-end offering that aligns with the brand’s premium aspirations.

The MG Cyberster’s arrival in India signifies a bold move into the luxury EV market, appealing to enthusiasts seeking a performance-oriented electric vehicle. As a fully imported model, the Cyberster’s high price may limit its accessibility but its distinctive blend of style, advanced technology and performance potential could carve out a niche in the country’s growing EV market.

While the Cyberster aims to captivate with its futuristic appeal and driving dynamics, its success will largely hinge on MG’s ability to provide a seamless ownership experience through the new MG Select channel.
