MG Astor Gets New Cheaper Variants With Reduced Safety Features

MG Astor EX variants miss out on a lot of safety features for a minor reduction in prices

MG Motor India has launched 4 new variants of its SUV, the Astor, with an ‘EX’ suffix. While all these 4 variants are cheaper than their non-EX counterparts, they miss out on a long list of crucial safety features. The move comes in the wake of the ongoing global chip shortage.

The new variants are Style EX, Super EX, Smart EX, and Sharp EX but they are based only out of the petrol manual powertrain variants. They command prices up to Rs. 12,000/- lesser than their non-EX counterparts.

The safety features that have been deleted include Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control, Hill Hold Control, Hill Descent Control, Blind Spot Detection (Sharp only), Lane Change Assist (Sharp only), and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (Sharp only).

A total of 7 features have been deleted and some of these belong to the SUV’s dedicated ADAS functionalities. The move might help MG reduce waiting periods owing to the ongoing global chip shortage.

Fortunately, MG didn’t abruptly discontinue the standard variants with all the respective bells and whistles and paying the additional premium along with a little longer waiting period is enough to get your hands on to those variants.

In May, 2022, SUV sales, the Astor marked its name strongly. Out of nowhere, the Astor displaced as many as 7 SUVs clinching the seventh spot from 14th spot the previous month.

In May, it found 2022 homes overtaking popular names like Maruti Suzuki S-Cross, Hyundai Alcazar, Skoda Kushaq, and Volkswagen Taigun.

The MG Astor currently starts at Rs. 10.22 lakhs (ex-showroom) for the base Style EX variant and goes up to Rs. 18.13 lakhs (ex-showroom) for the top-end Savvy Turbo AT variant.

It competes with the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, Nissan Kicks, and the recently unveiled Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder.
