Mercedes Reveals Details Of New 2.0L Aluminium Diesel Engine

The new 2.0-litre will replace the existing 2.1-litre engine and the new E220d will be the first car to be powered by this new motor, it is the first all aluminium engine from the German automaker.

The new 2.0-litre diesel engine produces 192 BHP

Mercedes-Benz unveiled the new E-Class in January and now it has revealed all the details about the newly developed 2.0-litre aluminium diesel engine that will power the new sedan. It will replace the existing 2.1-litre engine that powers most of the vehicles from the automaker. It is the company’s first all-aluminium diesel motor.

The new 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine codenamed as ‘OM654’ weighs 168 kgs which is 34 kgs less than the predecessor that weighed 202 kgs due to the use of aluminium. The new powerplant is claimed to be 14 percent more efficient than the 2.1-litre mill.

The new diesel produces 192 BHP compared to the 168 BHP of the predecessor and it will be mated to a 9-speed automatic gearbox. It will help the new E220d do 0-100 km/hr in 7.3 seconds before reaching a top speed of 240 km/hr.

The new engine is claimed to be more smooth with reduced vibrations due to the use of components such as steel pistons, step combustion bowls and Nanoslide coating on cylinders for reduced fiction. It is further benefited by the use of the fourth-generation common rail injection system.

The new Mercedes 2.0-litre diesel engine is the first member of an all-new family of engines that will replace most of the existing engines and will be compatible to front, rear and all-wheel drive layouts. These engines will be used in longitudinal as well as transverse geometries.

The 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine is also claimed to be low on emissions as it employs the exhaust re-circulation system along with the AdBlue technology that treats the exhaust gases. The Indian Mercedes vehicles are equipped with 2.1-litre engines locally produced by Force Motors while the new 2.0-litre will take some time to reach our shores.
