Mercedes Maybach S-Class recalled over software issue in the ECU

Mercedes-Benz India has issued a recall for select units of its flagship luxury sedan, the Maybach S-Class, citing potential fire risk concerns. The recall affects specific models of the seventh-generation W223 Maybach S-Class that have been on sale since 2021. This action stems from a software issue in the engine control unit (ECU) that does not meet the latest specifications.

Details of the Recall

According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) vehicle recall database, a total of 386 units of the Maybach S-Class manufactured between April 29, 2021 and January 27, 2024, along with one S-Class unit produced on April 21, 2021, are impacted. The recall listing highlights that the ECU software issue could cause exhaust temperatures to rise beyond safe levels. This increase could potentially damage critical components, including the engine wiring harness and catalytic converter, and in extreme cases, lead to unexpected propulsion loss or an elevated risk of fire.

Manufacturer’s Response

Mercedes-Benz India has stated that owners of the affected vehicles will be contacted directly to schedule appointments for inspection and rectification. The necessary software update will be provided free of charge, ensuring that the issue is resolved efficiently.

Previous Recalls

This marks the third recall for the S-Class in India in 2024. Earlier this year, the automaker recalled 586 S-Class sedans due to a risk associated with the fuel pump shut-off mechanism. The latest recall adds to a growing list of precautionary measures aimed at addressing safety and compliance concerns.

Industry Implications

Recalls of luxury vehicles like the Maybach S-Class underscore the growing focus on vehicle safety and regulatory compliance in the automotive industry. While such recalls may cause temporary inconvenience to owners, they also demonstrate the manufacturers’ commitment to addressing potential risks proactively.

Affected owners are encouraged to reach out to their nearest authorised Mercedes-Benz service centres to address the issue promptly and ensure the continued safety and reliability of their vehicles.
