Mercedes Imports GLC 300 & C250 d In India For Homologation

2016 Mercedes GLC Front

The Mercedes GLC and C250 d share the same underpinnings based on the all-new MRA platform and have arrived in the country for homologation purposes.

The GLC will be going on sale in India for the first time

Recent import data suggests that Mercedes-Benz has brought the GLC and the C250 d for homologation purposes in India, hinting towards an impending launch next year. Both models share the same underpinnings being based on the new generation MRA platform and while the C-Class sedan is already on sale here, this will be the GLC’s first innings in the Indian market. Formerly known as the GLK, the GLC was introduced internationally earlier this year and gets a longer wheelbase than the sedan derivative.

The model imported is the Mercedes GLC 300 4MATIC petrol which is surprising considering the segment is a diesel dominated one. Nonetheless, given the recent regulations over diesel cars, the petrol powered version is likely to have a wider customer base. In terms of power, the GLC 300 4MATIC uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine tuned for 241 HP and 370 Nm of torque, paired to the new 9-speed automatic transmission. In addition, the GLC is likely to get the 2.1-litre diesel motor when it goes on sale in the country next year.

Coming to the other import, the Mercedes C250 d (now used to denote diesel instead of CDI) is a more powerful version of the new generation C-Class. At present, the sedan is available in the 220 d trim with power coming from a 2.1-litre turbocharged diesel motor tuned for 170 HP and 400 Nm of torque. The C250 d uses the same motor but with power uprated to 201 HP and 500 Nm of torque and is capable of doing the 0-100 km/hr sprint in 7 seconds flat with an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/hr.

The Mercedes C250 d is more powerful than the BMW 3-Series 320d as well as the Audi A4 35 TDI and will certainly give diesel heads something to look forward to. While a launch timeline has not been confirmed for either of the two cars, we expect the German auto giant to introduce a new model every month in 2016 similar to its strategy for 2015. Meanwhile, Mercedes’ next launch is the GLE 450 AMG Coupe that is scheduled to go on sale on 12th January.

Both diesel models will be sold in Delhi if the diesel car ban lifts off by April 2016
