Mercedes launched its flagship SUV, the GLS in the Indian market today, priced at Rs. 80.40 lakhs (ex-showroom, Pune).
Mercedes has launched the GLS in the Indian market today. The GLS is essentially a facelifted version of the GL-Class. It comes loaded with futuristic technologies, as can be expected with any flagship Mercedes in today’s market. The GLS can actually be considered as the S-Class of SUVs. The SUV was first unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show last year.
The Mercedes GLS sports an all-new front profile with a new slated grille and updated sportier bumpers. The 3-pointed star is larger in size now. The GLS also get a new muscular bonnet with sharp lines and bulges. The headlights get multi-beam lamps coupled with new LED daytime running lights. It also gets all new colours and new alloy wheels. On the side, there is little to comment as not much has changed compared to the GL. The rear gets new LED tail lights and an updated bumper.
On the inside, the SUV still gets the 7-seater configuration. Luxury has been taken a step further. The interior layout has gone through some redesigns and tweaks. As for the infotainment system, the older integrated one has been replaced by a new 8-inch touch-screen. The steering wheel has also been updated and it now gets a 3-spoke design as compared to the older model, which had 4 spokes. The steering wheel comes wrapped in Napa leather for added luxurious feel.
The Mercedes GLS also gets a slew of safety equipment mostly borrowed from the S-Class, like Collision Assist, Brake Assist, Crosswind Assist, AWD Traction Control, ESP, ABS and the list goes on. In the Indian market, Mercedes is offering only 1 engine which is the 3.0-litre V6 diesel available in GLS350d guise. It produces 258 HP of power and is mated to the new 9-speed automatic gearbox, taking the GLS from 0-100 km/hr in 8.2 seconds.
