The new generation Mercedes GLC is based on the same MRA platform as the C-Class and the SUV also shares several features inside the cabin with its saloon twin.
While the current generation Mercedes GLK-Class SUV has not been as popular as the larger ML and GL-Class SUVs in the company’s lineup, the German auto giant is working on the next generation model that will iron out all the creases with more features, improved dynamics and of course the new name ‘GLC’ (as per the Mercedes’ new nomenclature) will be on offer. Scheduled to be unveiled globally in June this year, the 2016 Mercedes GLC was recently caught testing in China with interiors of the SUV completely revealed.
The 2016 Mercedes GLC shares its underpinnings with the new generation C-Class (hence the name) and comes with a familiar cabin that is already seen on the saloon derivative. The chunky 3-spoke steering wheel, five air-con vents finished in brushed aluminium and the walnut brown finished centre console are reminiscent of the C-Class. The floating touchscreen display unit and the Touchpad equipped COMAND infotainment system have also been carried over from the saloon. The next generation GLC also maintains the classy, clutter-free interiors finished with top-notch materials.
On the outside, the 2016 Mercedes GLC will be retaining the boxy design language seen on the current model, albeit toned down a little. The front gets a prominent new bold grille with twin horizontal slats flanked by new headlight clusters with curvaceous LED daytime running lights. The rear follows a clutter free design with horizontally stacked tail lights and twin exhausts.
In terms of power, the Mercedes GLC will be using the 2.0-litre and 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol engines with a 475 HP AMG-tuned 4.0-litre V8 powered version also in the works. There will also be 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder diesels on offer, depending on the market. A major change, Mercedes will also be introducing a Right-Hand Drive version of the 2016 GLC that will enable the company to launch the SUV in several markets including the UK, Australia and India among others. This is in return should certainly help improve sales. With the German giant being aggressive about its Indian operations, a launch can be expected next year in the country.
