Mercedes EQS SUV launched in India, will be assembled locally in our country
Mercedes-Benz has launched the EQS SUV in India, priced at an introductory Rs. 1.41 crores (ex-showroom). Positioned between the EQE SUV and luxurious Maybach EQS SUV, this is the brand’s latest offering in the growing electric vehicle market. With its launch, Mercedes now has six EVs in its Indian lineup, signalling the company’s strong push towards electrification. Notably, India is one of the first markets outside the USA where the EQS SUV will be assembled, following the brand’s strategy of localised production to enhance accessibility.
EQS SUV: Key Details and Configuration
The EQS SUV, available in the fully-loaded 580 4Matic variant, is the second 7-seater electric vehicle Mercedes has introduced in India, following the EQB. Designed as a luxurious family-oriented electric SUV, it comes equipped with advanced features and impressive performance credentials.
Exterior
In terms of design, the EQS SUV shares some elements with its Maybach counterpart, albeit with a toned-down exterior. Up front, it features a distinctive black panel grille that stretches across the bumper, accompanied by LED headlamps connected by a light bar. Compared to the Maybach version, the standard EQS SUV has less chrome detailing, presenting a more understated look.
The rear of the vehicle retains the full-width LED tail lamps seen on the Maybach EQS SUV. However, the bumper has been redesigned with fewer chrome accents. Dimensionally, the EQS SUV is slightly smaller than the Mercedes GLS, making it 82 mm shorter, 3 mm wider, and 105 mm lower, providing it a sleek and dynamic profile.
Interior
Inside, the EQS SUV is loaded with high-end features. The focal point of the cabin is the Hyperscreen, which combines a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 17.7-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 12.3-inch screen for the front passenger. All three displays are integrated into a single continuous unit, emphasising the futuristic feel of the interior.
Other notable features include soft-close doors, puddle lamps, illuminated running boards, a 15-speaker Burmester sound system, five-zone climate control and dual 11.6-inch entertainment screens for rear passengers. Safety features are also top-notch, with the inclusion of nine airbags and an ADAS Level 2 system. The SUV is offered with an AMG Line styling package that brings sporty bumpers and 21-inch alloy wheels, adding to its overall appeal.
Powertrain and Range
The EQS 580 4Matic is powered by a 122kWh battery that drives a dual electric motor setup. This configuration generates 544 HP and 858 Nm of torque, allowing the SUV to accelerate from 0-100 km/hr in just 4.7 seconds. The vehicle offers an impressive ARAI-certified range of 809 km on a single charge, making it suitable for long journeys without frequent recharging. Moreover, the battery supports 200kW DC fast charging, adding convenience for owners on the go.
Pricing and Market Positioning
Priced at Rs. 1.41 crore, the EQS SUV sits just Rs. 2 lakhs higher than the EQE SUV (Rs. 1.39 crore), positioning itself competitively within the premium electric SUV segment. It will face direct competition from the BMW iX (Rs. 1.4 crore) and Audi Q8 e-tron, which is priced around Rs. 1.15 crores.
Mercedes-Benz has already seen strong interest in its electric vehicles in India. Over 50 bookings have been made for the recently launched Maybach EQS SUV, and the EQS sedan has recorded sales of over 500 units in the country, indicating robust demand for luxury EVs.
With the launch of the EQS SUV, Mercedes-Benz continues to solidify its position as a leader in the Indian luxury EV market. Offering a blend of cutting-edge technology, performance, and comfort, the EQS SUV is aimed at customers looking for a premium electric SUV with seven-seat practicality. As the competition heats up in the electric luxury SUV segment, the EQS SUV is well-equipped to carve out its space in the market.
