Mercedes has launched the entry-level diesel in the E-Class line-up, the E220d.
The ninth generation Mercedes E-Class was launched earlier this year with a petrol as well as a diesel engine. The E200 is a petrol variant powered by an in-line 4-cylinder 2.0-litre petrol motor that punches out 184 HP and 300 Nm of torque while the E350d is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine that punches out 258 HP and 620 Nm of torque.
In a move to reach out to even more customers, Mercedes-Benz has launched the E220d grade on the E-Class. The E-Class has been one of the highest selling cars for Mercedes in India since its inception. The E220d is the entry-level diesel model in the E-Class line-up with a smaller and lesser powerful 2.0-litre diesel mill that produces 191 HP at 3800 RPM and 400 Nm of maximum torque between 1600 to 2800 RPM. This engine comes mated to 9G-Tronic automatic transmission.
The E220d debuts Mercedes’ new 1950cc diesel engine which takes 7.8 seconds to do the 0-100 km/hr sprint and has a claimed top speed of 240 km/hr. The locally manufactured oil burner is the first all aluminium 4-cylinder diesel mill from Mercedes and is 17% lighter and 13% more efficient than the previous generation engine.
The E220d trim is offered in the LWB (Long Wheelbase) version only considering most of the customers buying an E-Class will be chauffeur driven. Most of the features from the E200 have been carried over to the E220d. Nothing has changed on the outside except for the E220d badging at the rear. It still features full LED headlamps with the LED DRLs and the twin-slat chrome grille.
Changes to the inside too are very minimal. There is the 3-spoke leather wrapped steering wheel with intuitive touch sensitive buttons that help scroll through menus on the Multi-Information Display and the main screen. The 12.3″ touchscreen infotainment system can be accessed via the multi-touch controller on the centre console and also features COMAND ONLINE.
The Mercedes E220d LWB misses out on Air Body Control self-levelling suspension with adaptive damping technology that enhances the ride as well as driving dynamics. Talking of driving dynamics, the E220d sedan comes with different driving modes like Eco, Comfort, Sports and Sports Plus. There’s enough room inside the car (especially at the rear) thanks to the car measuring 5063 mm in length. Mercedes has also thrown in the memory function on the rear seats with reclining degree of up to 37 degrees, it also gets a panoramic sunroof.
The E220d trim is priced at Rs. 57.14 lakhs (ex-showroom, Pune) and by offering a smaller engine, Mercedes has not only made the E-Class fuel-efficient but also cheaper compared to the E350d trim that is priced at Rs. 70.15 Lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi). The E-Class takes on the likes of BMW 5-Series, Audi A6 and Jaguar XF. It is the top-selling car in its segment.
