Mercedes Announce A Smaller Version Of The Legendary G-Wagon
Mercedes Benz announced a smaller G Class amongst other cars like the CLA, S-Class and electric versions of the E-Class, GLC and C-Class. However, they remained tight-lipped when it came to discussing it. Let’s understand what the baby G-Class would look like.
The current Mercedes Gelandewagen comes from the 1980s, when it was used as a machine for the German army.
Over the years until the 2010s, they produced 2 door versions, but as time passed, it became a luxurious product catering to high society individuals. However, the G-Wagon still retained outstanding offroad capabilities, which is the reason why Mercedes may want to launch a smaller version of it and make it more appealing to offroad-centric buyers.
Potential Engine Options
The smaller three-door SUV should be offered with the same petrol and diesel engines in India, which include a 3.0-litre inline-six diesel engine which produces 326 HP and sends power to all four wheels via a 9-speed automatic transmission. There is also the high-performance G63 AMG version, which has a 4.0-litre Biturbo V8, which produces 577 HP and the beefier version of the 9-speed automatic transmission.
Market Competition
The Mercedes G-Class Short Wheelbase Version will compete with the Defender 90, Toyota Fortuner and Jeep Wrangler. It will be stiff competition but a market that will give the buyers good options for going somewhere other than just normal roads.
Outlook
The reports also suggest a completely new platform which will help Mercedes produce a baby G-Wagon based on the big G, borrowing stylistic elements from the latter. It may be able to be cheaper, but perhaps not based on the ladder frame chassis as the larger G-Wagon. It will be amazing to see an offroad-centric version of the G-Class that is shorter and competes with the best urban exploration machines on the market.
