Mercedes has launched the AMG GT Roadster and AMG GT-R in India, priced from Rs. 2.19 crores.
The AMG division of Mercedes completes 50 years this year and Mercedes-Benz is celebrating this feat by bringing back to back AMG models in India. The automaker recently launched the AMG GLC 43 Coupe and now it’s time to welcome the AMG GT Roadster and AMG GT-R, priced at Rs. 2.19 crores and Rs. 2.23 crores respectively (both prices, ex-showroom, India).
While the AMG GT-R is a more mental version of the already existing AMG GT-S, the GT Roadster brings the charm of a convertible.
Mercedes AMG GT-R
Design and looks wise, the AMG GT-R gets a new massive Panamericana grille up front that is inspired from the 300SL from the 1950s. The muscular stance, well-proportioned lines and the curvy rear all contribute to the aesthetics of the sports car while the overall design and the rear spoiler on the AMG GT-R contribute to better aerodynamics. The green paint you see on the AMG GT-R here is called the ‘AMG Green Hell Magno’ paint scheme and is exclusive only to the AMG GT-R.
The supercar weighs just 1630 kgs (kerb) thanks to the use of carbon fibre and aluminium in the roof and alloys respectively. The chassis on the AMG GT-R also sees minor revisions and it also gets a heavily reworked double wishbone suspension derived from the GT3 race car. Powering this mammoth of a beast is the same 4.0-litre V8 Bi-Turbo engine that powers the AMG GT-S as well, however, this engine in the AMG GT-R is tuned to deliver 585 horses and 700 Nm of torque. Sending power to the rear wheels is a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. 0-100 km/hr is claimed to come up in just 3.6 seconds.
The interior is similar to the AMG GT-S, however, the AMG sports bucket seats, steering wheel and dashboard get yellow stitching while the seat belts are done up in yellow too. The instrument cluster gets an 11.4 cm TFT colour multi-function display. Other features in the AMG GT-R includes a rear-axle steering, 5 driving modes (Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Race and Individual), AMG Traction Control, AMG performance exhaust system and a rear-axle limited slip differential.

Mercedes AMG GT Roadster
Now coming to the AMG GT Roadster, it also embodies the same design philosophy as the AMG GT-S and the AMG GT-R. The long bonnet, large Panamericana grille, LED headlamps with LED DRLs, massive air-intakes in the bumper all add drama to the front end of the AMG Roadster. The side profile is where the AMG Roadster tells a different story. The sports car will definitely grab more eyeballs in this convertible avatar. The rear looks similar to the AMG GT-S.
Mercedes states the opening and closing of the roof takes around 11 seconds and can be carried out up to a top speed of 50 km/hr. The AMG Roadster too is powered by the same 4.0-litre V8 Bi-Turbo engine but with a lesser power and torque output when compared to the AMG GT-R and even the AMG GT-S. The engine on the AMG Roadster makes 476 HP and 630 Nm of torque and comes paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The AMG Roadster is a tad bit slow (when compared to the AMG GT-R) in the 0-100 km/hr run at 4.0 seconds.
The interior layout is again similar to other AMG GTs. Features like AMG Traction Control, 5 driving modes and rear axle limited slip differential make it to the AMG Roadster as well but misses out on the rear axle steering.
