Mercedes has introduced a new convertible along with a performance coupe SUV
Mercedes-Benz India has introduced two new models to the Indian market – the AMG GLC 43 4MATIC Coupe, priced at Rs. 1.11 crore (ex-showroom) and the CLE 300 Cabriolet, priced at Rs. 1.1 crores (ex-showroom). These vehicles mark the latest additions to Mercedes-Benz’s diverse portfolio, catering to enthusiasts of both high-performance SUVs and stylish convertibles.
The AMG GLC 43 4MATIC Coupe, which made its global debut in September 2023, represents a significant shift from its predecessor. The new model replaces the previous 3.0-litre bi-turbo V6 engine with a more compact and efficient 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder turbo-petrol engine equipped with 48V mild-hybrid technology.
Despite the downsized engine, the GLC 43 offers 421 HP and 500 Nm of torque. This allows the coupe to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/hr in 4.7 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/hr. The engine is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission, powering all four wheels and comes standard with rear-wheel steering, high-performance brakes, speed-sensing steering and adjustable suspension dampers.
In terms of design, the GLC 43 differentiates itself from the standard GLC with AMG-specific elements. These include a distinctive grille, sportier front and rear bumpers, AMG side skirting and a prominent rear diffuser with quad exhausts. The coupe’s sloping roofline and large alloy wheels, which can go up to 21 inches, add to its dynamic stance.
The interior of the GLC 43 mirrors the luxury of the standard GLC but with a sportier twist. It features an AMG-specific steering wheel, Nappa leather seats, AMG-branded pedals and floor mats, along with illuminated door sills. The digital instrument cluster and infotainment system are enhanced with unique AMG graphics. The vehicle also comes equipped with a 710W, 15-speaker Burmester sound system, 12.3-inch driver display and an 11.9-inch infotainment touchscreen.
The AMG GLC 43 4MATIC Coupe is positioned to compete with the BMW X3 M40i in the Indian market, which is priced at Rs. 87.70 lakh (ex-showroom).
Alongside the AMG GLC 43, Mercedes-Benz has also launched the CLE 300 Cabriolet in India. The CLE Cabriolet is built on Mercedes’ Modular Rear Architecture (MRA) platform, which it shares with the current C-Class and the upcoming new-generation E-Class. This gives the CLE a longer and more refined profile compared to the older C- and E-Class coupes.
The CLE Cabriolet features a design inspired by the outgoing E-Class coupe and cabriolet, with a large grille, long bonnet and an automatic multi-layered fabric hood that folds neatly into the boot. The model available in India comes in the AMG Line trim, which includes sportier design elements, particularly in the bumpers.
Inside, the CLE 300 Cabriolet shares much of its layout with the C-Class, featuring a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an 11.9-inch portrait-style infotainment display. The 2+2 seating arrangement includes newly designed front seats with integrated headrests, heating and four-way lumbar support as standard. Notably, the CLE Cabriolet is the first Mercedes cabriolet to offer separate head airbags for rear passengers as standard. The soft top can be opened or closed within 20 seconds at speeds of up to 60 km/hr.
Under the hood, the CLE 300 Cabriolet is powered by a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder turbo-petrol engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system. This setup produces 258 HP and 400 Nm of torque, enabling the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/hr in 6.6 seconds, with a top speed of 250 km/hr.
The CLE Cabriolet faces competition from models like the BMW Z4, priced at Rs. 90.90 lakhs (ex-showroom) and offers a slightly more affordable alternative to the Porsche 718 Boxster.
