Top-selling Sedans In May 2022

Skoda Superb is the highest selling entry-level luxury car in May, 2022

May 2022 sedan sales – Tata Tigor overtakes both Honda Amaze and Hyundai Aura, Skoda Superb posts 4-digit growth

Like the hatchbacks, sedan sales in May, 2022, were on the path of recovery in this post pandemic era. Although sedans are not attractive to customers anymore, most of them have posted triple digit YoY growth this time.

In the B segment, Maruti Suzuki Dzire took the top spot selling 11,603 units and nearly doubling its last year’s performance. It was distantly followed by Tata Tigor, which has, surprisingly, overtaken both Honda Amaze and Hyundai Aura.

The entry-level Tata sedan, which also has an electric variant, has posted an impressive 983 percent growth selling 3975 units. Though the Japanese and Korean sedans are not far behind, this achievement will keep Tata’s spirits high.

In the C segment, Honda City grabbed the first place back from Skoda Slavia although the Czech sedan posted a marginal MoM growth. The City not only overtook the Slavia but also massively widened the gap selling 1162 more units.

But, Honda’s achievement might be short-lived as Slavia has seen a growth slowdown only due to the arrival of its Volkswagen brother, Virtus, and the manufacturing defects customers brought to the company’s notice online. Once things get settled, Slavia will be back to business.

Hyundai Verna took the third place selling 1488 units. Verna’s numbers seem commendable as the car is quite old now. It has also witnessed 26 percent YoY growth. Maruti Suzuki Ciaz distantly followed Verna and could manage just over one third of the Hyundai’s sales.

It must be seen what Maruti Suzuki has in store, again, for the old sedan. The last place was taken by Volkswagen Vento and its 4 unit sales is understandable as it’s on the verge of discontinuation.

In the entry-level luxury sedan segment, Skoda Superb has, surprisingly, overtaken both Toyota Camry and Skoda Octavia. From selling just 10 units last May, sales have risen all the way to 152 units with a YoY growth of 1420 percent.

Though the facelifted Camry is not even months old, the hundred odd unit sales doesn’t seem encouraging. Let’s wait and watch how the hybrid sedan performs in the long run. Finally, Skoda Octavia was the only sedan to have posted negative growth other than Volkswagen Vento this time.
