The May 2020 sedan sales report is out. This body type has seen a poor cumulative number of 4164 unit sales last month. When you compare it to last year sales, it has fallen by more than 89 percent due to the ongoing pandemic crisis.
The cumulative sales of all sedans last month is even less than Dzire’s 5476 unit sales in March 2020. What makes it further alarming is the fact that Maruti sold around 20,000 units of Dzire in the same time last year.
The compact sedan segment leadership is retained by Dzire with 2215 units. It has seen 86 percent fall in YoY sales. Hyundai Xcent/Aura comes second with 349 units and 79 percent degrowth.
Honda Amaze is the hardest hit car with 140 units sold and 98 percent fall in sales. Tata Tigor is the least affected with only 132 unit sales and 57 percent degrowth. Ford Aspire comes last with 44 units and 94 percent fall in sales.
Now moving on to the C-segment sales, there is a major reshuffle in positions here. Topping the chart is Hyundai as they sold 317 units. YoY degrowth is 88 percent.
It is followed closely by Skoda Rapid with 291 units and 60 percent fall in numbers and it’s the least affected car in the segment. Maruti Ciaz falls to third position with 192 units and 95 percent negative sales.
In the D-segment space the Skoda Octavia has done 32 units with 86 percent degrowth. Hyundai Elantra scored a poor 6 with 94 percent fall. Only 1 unit of Honda Civic was sold last month. Toyota Corolla is discontinued and henceforth we might not see any Octavia units either.
The upper D-segment sedan space saw Skoda Superb with 73 unit sales and 14 percent fall in numbers. Meanwhile Toyota Camry with 13 unit sales has seen 71 percent degrowth.
While the overall sales is quite disastrous after the market opens up. The sales are expected to increase gradually in the coming times but the sedan segment is still in trouble. It’s not expected to grow anytime soon as demand for hatchbacks and SUVs is more.
