While the sales are extremely low, Maruti keeps the top spot.
The May 2020 hatchback sales are quite terrible to see. Usually the sales are 10 times more than what it is. However, it’s at least better than the 0 sales in April 2020 when the entire country was on strict lockdown.
There are only 4 contenders in the entry-level hatchback segment. However, this segment is expected to see the maximum spike in the coming days as people shy away from public transport.
Maruti Alto as usual hits the top spot but this time around with 1506 units. 91 percent year on year fall in numbers. Renault Kwid is a distant second with 684 units and 87 percent negative growth.
Maruti S-Presso does 489 while Datsun redi-GO is in the fourth position with 164 units and 82 percent fall in sales.
Moving a segment above, there is some reshuffle in positions. Maruti retains the top spot with Wagon R. It scores 1199 but with 92 percent negative YoY figures. Tata Tiago surprisingly takes the second spot with 857 units and 76 percent degrowth.
Hyundai Grand i10 comes third with very poor 718 units sold and 91 percent YoY degrowth. Hyundai Santro and Ford Figo have taken the maximum hit of 97 percent each.
Hyundai has sold 157 units of Santro while Ford has sold only 17 units.
The Maruti Baleno continues to lead the chart for premium hatchbacks. It has done 1587 units but 90 percent YoY degrowth. Tata Altroz moves up the ladder, hits the second spot with 1379 units.
Volkswagen Polo comes third with 1126 units and it is the least affected with only 24 percent degrowth. Hyundai Elite i20 is on 4th with 878 units and huge 90 percent fall in sales. Toyota Glanza at 5th with 507 units and -76 percent sales.
Ford Freestyle is the most affected car with 57 units and 92 percent fall in numbers. Honda is yet to launch the Jazz facelift and hence no sales in May 2020.
Overall more than 80 percent fall in hatchback sales compared to May 2019. We hope to see better numbers in the coming months.
