2016 Maserati Levante Front Three Quarters

Maserati has ended the production of its V8 powered models, focus on electric future

In a significant shift towards electrification, Italian carmaker Maserati has announced the end of its V8 era, marking the conclusion of production for its last two V8-powered models, the Quattroporte and Levante. The production of the Ghibli sedan, which shared the same M156 platform developed under Fiat’s ownership, had already ceased earlier this year.

The final car to receive the renowned V8 engine is a bespoke Quattroporte Grand Finale, custom-built for a U.S.-based owner. This model features the ‘F134’ 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, designed by Ferrari, which delivers an impressive 572 HP.

With the discontinuation of the Quattroporte and Levante, Maserati’s current lineup now comprises three models – GranTurismo, Grecale and the MC20 supercar. Despite this streamlined range, the brand is gearing up for a significant transformation.

Maserati has reiterated its commitment to a future driven by electric vehicles through its Folgore BEV program. The company currently offers the GranTurismo and GranCabrio in both internal combustion engine and battery electric vehicle versions. Similarly, the Grecale is available in ICE, mild-hybrid and BEV variants. Maserati has also confirmed that successors to the Quattroporte and Levante are in development.

In an official statement, Maserati acknowledged the challenges it faces during this transition period, emphasising the need to stay focused on its objectives. “Maserati is facing a major challenge and must remain focused on its objectives in the coming months,” the statement read. The brand has set a goal to become an all-electric manufacturer by 2028, a target that underscores its strategic pivot towards sustainability.

As Maserati navigates these changes, it claims to remain dedicated to maintaining its heritage of luxury and performance while embracing the innovations of electric mobility. The end of the V8 era signifies not just the closure of a chapter but the beginning of a new journey for the iconic Trident brand.
