The recently spotted Maruti compact SUV has been internally code-named YFG
The upcoming Maruti Suzuki’s compact SUV, the YFG, has been spotted testing again on our roads. Intended to rival Hyundai’s Creta, it is expected to the launched around Diwali this year.
Code-named YFG, this SUV from Maruti is being jointly-developed with Toyota on the latter’s low-cost DNGA modular platform that underpins many of Toyota’s and Daihatsu’s cars. The compact SUV will be manufactured at Toyota’s plant in Karnataka and supplied to Maruti.
Toyota has code-named its version of the compact SUV the D22. Once the YFG gets introduced in the market, D22 should make its debut this year.
Coming to the looks department, well, there is hardly much to say here as the recently spotted Maruti YFG was heavily camouflaged. But, the overall silhouette looks inspired by the Suzuki A Cross sold abroad.
Unlike the mere rebadging exercise done previously, both brands are expected to offer unique designs for the YFG and D22. Since they are going to rival the Hyundai Creta, expect them to be loaded to the brim with features.
Thus, a large free-standing infotainment touchscreen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, connected car tech, voice command, 6 airbags, among several other features should be on offer.
Also, both cars will feature proper hybrid powertrain (1.5-litre petrol motor paired with a electric system). These models could possibly run on electric power alone, though only for short distances.
