Due to the delay of the upcoming 1.5-litre diesel engine, the YBA compact SUV will be powered by the 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine which is currently found on other models from the same stable.
Maruti Suzuki as everyone knows has no diesel engines of its own and the diesel engines powering its cars are sourced from Fiat currently. The company though is known to be working on two new diesel engines, a 1.5-litre and a 800cc unit. The 1.5-litre diesel engine which is being developed by Maruti in-house, has been reportedly delayed by upto two years. The engine is only expected to reach the market by 2018, from the earlier launch due in 2016. The company has revealed the reason for the same as problems in achieving the desired levels of performance and refinement. However, the 800cc diesel engine which is set to debut on the Celerio diesel is unaffected and the launch for the same has not been delayed.
This essentially means that the upcoming YBA compact SUV (Vitara Brezza) which was supposed to get the 1.5-litre diesel engine will have to make do with the smaller 1.3-litre Multijet unit that is sourced from Fiat. This engine can be found in every diesel Maruti car in India and will not be very capable to suffice the needs of the YBA. It can generate 90 PS of power at 4000 RPM and 200 Nm of torque at 1750 RPM. Therefore, the YBA is only expected to get the new 1.5-litre engine when it will be due for a facelift after two to three years of launch.
The probability of the vehicle to get a more powerful diesel engine other than the same old 1.3-litre unit is next to zero because Maruti Suzuki will not be sourcing the 1.5-litre diesel engine from Fiat as it’s turning out to be very costly for the company. The 1.5-litre Fiat diesel engine will be debuting in India through a future Jeep model. Whether or not this affects the company’s other future launches remains to be seen as we wait for an official announcement from the manufacturer on this topic.
