The Maruti Wagon R is Maruti’s exceedingly successful model. It maintains its position in top-5 selling cars in India. The first generation of the Wagon R was launched in the year 1999. Followed by the second generation in the year 2010. With competition increasing, Maruti launched the third generation of the Wagon R in the year 2019. This model has been exclusively made for India, one cannot find the same model sold anywhere in the world.
Pros – Airy And Spacious Cabin, Easy To Drive, Performance From The 1.2-litre Engine
Cons – Steering Feel And Feedback, Light Build, Poor High Speed Stability
Maruti Wagon R Exteriors
With its third generation, the Maruti Wagon R retains its tallboy design for which this car is known. The Wagon R has grown in terms of length and width, which is clearly seen with the eyes. Upfront the arrow-shaped dual split headlights and a simple chrome line in the grille looks pleasing. From the side, the Wagon R looks nicely sculpted and the wheel arches are also neatly defined. One can opt for the alloy wheels as a part of the paid accessory. The window line merges with the rear windscreen, which gives a floating roof appeal. From the rear, the CR-V inspired taillight looks nice.
Maruti Wagon R Interiors
The cabin gets a dual-tone treatment with black and beige colours. Even though there are no soft-touch materials on the dashboard, it doesn’t feel cheap. The fit-finish of the overall cabin is nice and is well put together. With the new instrument cluster in the top-end trim, one also gets a digital tachometer. The steering wheel is shared with the Ignis.
The Wagon R comes equipped with Maruti’s SmartPlay infotainment system. It supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, USB & AUX connectivity and also gets steering mounted controls. Other features include remote keyless entry, electrically adjustable and foldable ORVMs, tilt steering, reverse parking sensors, and much more.
Maruti Wagon R Space
With its increased dimensions, the Wagon R feels more spacious than before. The front seats are quite comfortable, but one doesn’t sink into the seats. Also, there are no adjustable headrests even in the top trim. With its wider cabin, one can fit three adults comfortably in the rear seat of the Wagon R. The legroom and headroom are more than sufficient. At 341 litres, the boot space is also quite impressive. In order to increase the boot carrying capacity, one can also fold the rear seats in a 60:40 split option.
Maruti Wagon R Engine Performance
The Maruti Wagon R comes with two petrol engine options: one is a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder, K10B unit and the other one is a 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder, K12M unit. Both engines come mated to either a 5-speed manual transmission or 5-speed AMT (which Maruti likes to call AGS). The 1.0-litre engine churns out 67 HP @ 5500 RPM and 90 Nm of torque at 3500 RPM. The more powerful 1.2-litre engine churns out 82 HP @ 6000 RPM and 113 Nm of torque at 4200 RPM.
The 1.2-litre motor feels powerful at all times and what adds more to it is the lightweight chassis of the Wagon R. The engine likes to be revved and power keeps on developing in the higher rev range. The engine gets vocal in the higher rev range and one can hear the noise inside the cabin. The manual gearbox feels light. However, sometimes the gears are not slotted properly, requiring a second try to engage. The AMT works well in the city traffic conditions. The AMT gearbox bogs down when there is a sudden need for power. However, one can also take manual control of the gears via the tiptronic function.
One also gets an option of factory-fitted CNG kit with the 1.0-litre petrol engine. With petrol + CNG combo, one only gets an option of a manual transmission. In CNG mode, power is reduced to 58 HP @ 5500 RPM while torque output stands at 78 Nm @ 3500 RPM.
Maruti Wagon R Mileage
The BS6 Maruti Wagon R with the 1.0-litre engine has an ARAI fuel efficiency of 21.79 km/l. The figure is the same for both manual and AMT variants. In the real-world conditions, it will return around 15-17 km/l in city traffic conditions and 17-21 out on the highways for both the manual and automatic variants. The 1.2-litre engine has an ARAI fuel efficiency of 20.52 km/l. The figure is the same for both manual and AMT variants. In the real-world conditions, it will return around 14-16 km/l in city traffic conditions and 16-19 out on the highways for both the manual and automatic variants. The petrol engine with CNG has an ARAI fuel efficiency of 32.52 km/kg. However, the thing to note is that fuel efficiency also depends upon the style of driving.
Maruti Wagon R Handling
The Wagon R is best for driving in the city. The Wagon R’s straight line stability has been improved from before. However, the steering feels lifeless at high speeds. This car is not meant for cornering and is best suited for daily driving duties.
Maruti Wagon R Comfort
The suspension is set on the softer side. At low speeds, the ride quality is quite good. Bump absorption is good at low speeds. However, at higher speeds, the ride becomes a bit bouncy. However, because of its light build, sometimes suspension noise is heard inside the cabin.
Maruti Wagon R Safety
The Wagon R is based on the HEARTECT platform, which means the chassis is stiffer than before. In terms of the safety equipment, the Wagon R is equipped with a driver-side airbag, ABS with EBD, security alarm, central locking, and high-speed alerts as standard on all variants. Customers can opt for the passenger side airbag and seat belt pre-tensioner & force limiters as an optional kit.
