The new generation Maruti Swift scores only 2-stars in the Global NCAP crash tests.
Global NCAP is currently on a spree of crash testing Indian cars. After the impressive 4-star rating of the Vitara Brezza, it was Maruti’s most popular car next for the testing. The latest generation Maruti Swift was recently crash tested by Global NCAP and it scored a low 2-star rating.
High compression to the driver chest, unstable structure and poor feet protection for the driver resulted in this low score for the Maruti Swift. The results are a bit surprising considering the fact that dual front airbags and ISOFIX child seats come standard with the Swift across all variants.
The Child Occupant Protection also got 2-stars along with Adult Occupant Protection. The European counterpart of the Maruti Swift has actually scored high because it gets side and curtain airbags along with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) for added safety. In India, such features are not even available as an option.
The Maruti Swift is one of the highest selling cars in India and people buy this hatchback without thinking twice. Compared to the previous generation Swift, there is some improvement in safety thanks to the standard safety features. However, airbags and other safety features aren’t enough, the structure needs to be stable for better protection.
Maruti Swift Global NCAP
– Scores 2-stars for Adult & 2-stars for Child Occupant Protection
– Unstable structure, high driver chest compression and poor feet protection
