Maruti to launch Swift CNG in the new gen avatar in the next few months
Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to introduce a CNG variant of its newly launched fourth-generation Swift in India in the coming months. This move aligns with the company’s strategy to expand its portfolio of eco-friendly vehicles, catering to the growing demand for alternative fuel options.
The 2024 Maruti Swift features a new 1.2-litre, three-cylinder Z12E naturally aspirated petrol engine, delivering 82 HP and 112 Nm of torque. The Swift is the first Maruti Suzuki vehicle in India to be equipped with this engine, available with a 5-speed manual transmission and an optional 5-speed AMT.
Following the trend of other Maruti Suzuki Arena models, the Swift will soon be offered with a CNG option. This will make it the first model to combine the new Z12E engine with a CNG powertrain. In pure CNG mode, the engine is expected to produce slightly lower power and torque compared to its petrol counterpart and it will likely be paired exclusively with the 5-speed manual transmission. Maruti is unlikely to offer AMT with CNG just like the other CNG cars in their portfolio.
The current petrol variants of the new Swift are priced between Rs. 6.49 lakhs and Rs. 9.64 lakhs (ex-showroom). The upcoming CNG variants are expected to be approximately Rs. 90,000/- to Rs. 95,000/- more expensive than the equivalent petrol models. It remains to be seen which specific variants will be available with the CNG powertrain but there will be limited variants on offer.
The petrol version of the new Swift boasts great fuel efficiency figures with 24.80 km/l for the manual gearbox and 25.75 km/l for the AMT. The CNG variant is expected to offer even greater fuel efficiency, with a projected mileage of over 32 km/kg. This positions the Swift CNG as a strong contender against rivals like the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and Tata Tiago, both of which are available with CNG options.
