The country’s largest car maker, Maruti Suzuki in a startling revelation. The company is planning to reduce car manufacturing operations from its existing Gurgaon plant in due course of time. Maruti Suzuki has been rolling out cars starting from the Maruti 800 for almost three decades and this thriving place will soon become a diesel engine hub. The car making operations will be shifted to its new upcoming plant in Gujarat, but the company’s Gurgaon plant will still produce some cars.
The chairman of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, Mr. R.C Bhargava told in a statement that Gurgaon has become too congested to operate a car manufacturing industry with corporate offices and residential complexes coming up. Massive hindrances to the traffic movement take place due to cars rolling out continuously. The movement of the tractors and trailors also cause a lot of traffic jams and distress for the general public. The Gurgaon plant will be converted to a full-fledged engine manufacturing facility but at the same time will also produce a reduced quantity of vehicles.
The major part of the car making facilities like stamping, paint and assembly will be giving way to a 3 lakh capacity diesel engine plant, which will result in the company investing close to Rs. 1700 crore. Gujarat will eventually gain what Gurgaon will lose with a 2 million per year production facility coming up in Mehsana. Maruti Suzuki is likely to buy two 600 acres land in Mehsana where one would be reserved for car manufacturing while the other will be allocated to the vendors for components and ancillary operations. Maruti Suzuki will also continue to increase production at Manesar. A third plant is coming up in Manesar which has an annual capacity of 2.5 lakh units. Once the Manesar plant is operational on full steam, the new facility at Gujarat will be set up.
