The current generation Maruti Suzuki Swift and DZire have been on sale since 2011 and are one of the best sellers for the company. However with competition from the likes of Hyundai and Volkswagen gaining momentum, it’s time for Maruti to bring in the updated Swift twins to the country. While everyone expected that Maruti would unveil the models at the recently concluded 2014 Auto Expo, Maruti only showcased the modified versions of the existing Swift and DZire models.
The updated Swift will retain the styling from the current model, but will get subtle changes. The new front facia will dawn L-shaped DRLs with revised fog lamps, while the bumper will get silver accents for a premium look. The rear will get a re-designed centre stop light. The top of the line variant is expected to get 16-inch alloy wheels while the other variants will get a new wheel cover design. Maruti is also expected to add an all new Boost Blue metallic shade to the palette.
On the interior front, the changes to the 2014 Maruti Swift won’t be extensive, but there could be addition of features. The upholstery will be revised to new dual-tone colour options of blue and grey. Maruti will also add auto-touch up function for the passenger window, automatic headlamps and electronically retracting rear view mirrors. The Swift was also spied last year with features such as a start/stop button, keyless entry and cruise control, which are already offered on other cars. An updated music system with Bluetooth can also make way in the new Swift.
Mechanically, the Swift and DZire will retain the 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine and the 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine producing 85 BHP and 74 BHP of power respectively. Expect to see a revision on the prices of both the models as well. The updated Swift went on sale in Japan and European markets in mid-2013 and speculations were rife that the company would get them to India last year itself. However, Maruti will be launching the updated models in the second half of this year. The updated Swift will be locking horns with the next generation i20 which is expected to be launched during the festive season. We can expect Maruti to launch the updated Swift before the festive season, considering it would like to reserve that period for the Ciaz sedan.
