Maruti Suzuki Swift
The Maruti Suzuki Swift is one of India’s best selling cars. It was launched in 2005 and has since then created a cult. Maruti Suzuki sells close to 18,000 units of the Swift every month, with majority sales coming from the diesel model. The Maruti Suzuki Swift was initially launched with a 1.3-litre petrol engine (from the Esteem). In 2007, Maruti Suzuki plonked in Fiat’s 1.3-litre MultiJet engine in the Swift, renaming it as DDiS. Since the launch of the diesel model, the Swift has continuously commanded a waiting period, becoming one of Maruti Suzuki’s very successful models. The Maruti Suzuki Swift sold in the Indian market is now in its third generation. It is available with 2 engines – 1 petrol and 1 diesel.

The Maruti Swift petrol uses a 1.2-litre K-series engine to produce 87 PS of peak power output at 6000 RPM and 114 Nm of peak torque output at 4000 RPM. The diesel Maruti Swift uses a 1.3-litre engine to produce 75 PS of peak power at 4000 RPM and 190 Nm of peak torque at 2000 RPM. These engines are paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The Maruti Suzuki Swift is available in 6 variants – LXi, LDi, VXi, VDi, ZXi and ZDi. The VXi and VDi variants are the most popular variants of the Maruti Swift. Maruti Suzuki manufacturers less units of the ZXi and ZDi and thus these Swift variants have a higher waiting period.
The Maruti Swift has a very light steering wheel, which weighs up decently at speed. with a turning radius of just 4.8-metres, the Swift is easy to drive in the city. High speed stability is good too and the top end models offer ABS and EBD as standard equipment. Other notable features include dual airbags, alloy wheels, steering mounted audio controls, 2-din audio system (with USB and AUX ports), rear wiper and washer, remote keyless entry, multi-information display and electrically adjustable rear view mirrors.
The Maruti Suzuki Swift has many pros, such as good handling, attractive design and well laid out interiors. The Maruti Swift does have a few cons like brake issues on non-ABS equipped models, small boot spaces and small rear windows. Overall the Maruti Swift is a pleasing car for those looking for good mileage and service. The Swift is not the car for those who want to use the rear seat occasionally. The Maruti Swift competes with the Hyundai i10 and Volkswagen Polo, although many car makers have pitched their offerings straight against the Swift. Some of these indirect rivals include the Chevrolet Sail U-VA, Fiat Grande Punto and Tata Indica Vista.
Maruti Suzuki Swift Mileage – The new Maruti Suzuki Swift returns a mileage of 18.6 km/l (petrol model), while the diesel model returns 22.9 km/l (as per ARAI). This is 6% better than the old Swift. However most people are not likely to get the same mileage from their Maruti Swift, as ARAI mileage is under test conditions. Thus one can expect their Swift to return 12 and 16 km/l for the petrol and diesel versions respectively.
