Maruti Suzuki has announced the recall of 1492 cars in India due to a defective steering column. India’s largest automaker has already dispatched the replacement part to the dealer and the recall exercise will be done immediately and devoid of any cost to the customer. The recall affects cars manufactured between 19th to 26th October, 2013. Although Maruti Suzuki also exports some of the recalled models, the call-back for the defect is limited to cars sold in the local market.
The recalled cars include 592 units of the Swift, 581 units of the DZire, 306 units of the Ertiga and 13 units of the A-Star. The recall has been done quickly which is a good initiative by the company. However only 1492 cars are affected which seems surprising considering Maruti’s production per day is very high for the Swift twins alone. The A-Star is being discontinued soon and the vehicle is no longer exported as the Nissan Pixo to European markets due to poor demand for the hatchback.
To make it easy for customers to identify if their car is affected (since manufacturing date and buying/delivery date) is very different, Maruti Suzuki has made a recall page on their website where customers can simply fill in their vehicle’s chassis number to identify if their automobile is affected by the defective steering column. Maruti Suzuki has consistently won applauds for their service and actions such as this do help in ensuring customers are satisfied. However India’s largest carmaker behaved ignorant when it came to braking issues in the Swift.
