After the arrival of the Tata Nano in Gujarat, the state has all of a sudden become the next place to be for automakers in India. Now Maruti Suzuki is planning to setup a facility over there as the country’s largest carmaker by volume is looking at expanding its capacity. The seventh factory for Maruti, the possibility of entering Gujarat is very high as top executives from the company have recently met up with the chief minister Narendra Modi to discuss sites for the new factory. This new facility will take Maruti’s output to 3 million units by 2015 from the current 1.3 million. The company also uses the Mundra port for exports and with a plant nearby, it would end up saving alot of money on logistics.
“We looked at options where we could possibly build a new plant and had a very positive interaction with the Gujarat government. We have other options as well except Gujarat so we will take a firm decision in the next three to four months,” RC Bhargava, Maruti Suzuki Chairman, said.
