Maruti Suzuki has begun testing its Jimny in India and a mule was spied near the firm’s Manesar facility.
This closely follows reports about the top automaker rolling out the first India-assembled Jimny by September end.
Since the model has been on sale overseas for quite sometime, Maruti has wisely decided not to disguise it in any way. It must be told that the car that was spied was the 3-door Sierra model.
Painted in white, the Maruti Suzuki Jimny spied car is a cute little thing, with its upright stance and compact proportions.
Its circular headlamps, black grille, low-set fog lamps, short overhangs, chunky wheel arch cladding, spare wheel mounted on the tailgate and even the alloy wheels are all exactly the same as the model we saw at the Auto Expo 2020.
Powering the car is most likely the 1.5-litre petrol motor that makes 103 BHP of top power and a peak torque of 138 Nm. The power is sent to all four wheels via a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. Which one is in the spied car is not known.
Back in September, we had reported what Maruti’s plans are with the Jimny in India, which can be read here, and we do not expect the 3-door Jimny to be launched here.
However, the amount of interest the 2021 Mahindra Thar has garnered so far might change the carmaker’s mind about it. If not, we have to wait till 2023 for the launch of the 5-door Jimny in India.
