Maruti Suzuki offers multiple types of automatic transmissions
Maruti Suzuki has reached a significant milestone by selling over 10 lakh automatic vehicles. India’s largest carmaker has been instrumental in popularising automatic transmission technology in India. The company currently offers four different automatic transmission systems, catering to a wide audience with their 16 models that are equipped with AT.
One of the most important factors that contributed substantially to achieve this milestone was the introduction of Auto Gear Shift (AGS) technology in 2014, which was swiftly embraced by customers. Currently, AGS-equipped vehicles account for a significant 65 percent of the automatic cars sold by Maruti Suzuki. Additionally, 27 percent of the company’s automatic sales are attributed to models equipped with 4-speed Automatic Transmission (AT), while about 8 percent come from Hybrid e-CVT transmission models.
Maruti Suzuki is on the verge of achieving one lakh AT vehicle sales for the fiscal year 2023-24. According to their analysis, Nexa customers tend to gravitate towards high-end automatic variants, while Arena customers prefer mid-variants. Currently, Nexa accounts for approximately 58 percent of automatic car sales, while Arena contributes about 42 percent.
Delhi & NCR region, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh & Telangana and Kerala are the biggest contributors of automatic car sales for Maruti Suzuki.
The 5-speed AGS gearbox is available in models such as Alto K-10, S-Presso, Celerio, WagonR, Ignis, Swift, Dzire, Baleno and Fronx. The 4-speed automatic transmission is offered in the Jimny and Ciaz. The 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters is available in the Fronx, Brezza, Ertiga, XL6 and Grand Vitara. The e-CVT technology is available in the Intelligent Electric Hybrid models of the Grand Vitara and Invicto.
