Maruti is recalling multiple cars for an issue with the steering column.
As per a leaked document surfaced online, Maruti Suzuki has silently recalled the Dzire (petrol and diesel), Swift (petrol and diesel), Vitara Brezza (diesel), Baleno (petrol and diesel) and S-Cross (diesel) for a faulty steering column. Though the document does not mention the exact number of cars that are affected by this recall but it lists out the VIN prefix, chassis and engine numbers.
It is speculated that Maruti is replacing the complete steering column in the cars that are entering the workshop with a sticky steering and abnormal noise. The replacement bears no cost to the affected customers. The service advisors are asked to check if the vehicle is under the suspected VIN number range. The company is maintaining confidentiality about this replacement exercise.
While recalling a vehicle to replace a defective component free of cost is nothing ‘avant-garde’, it is unsettling that Maruti is not initiating a full-fledged recall for the same. After all, a sticky steering column has a direct influence on a vehicle’s manoeuvrability and stability.
