Maruti S-Presso achieved zero star rating in the latest round of Global NCAP #SaferCarsForIndia crash tests.
Fitted only with a driver airbag as standard, the micro SUV that was crash tested at 64 km/hr was given zero stars for adult occupant protection and two stars for child occupant protection.
According to Global NCAP’s statement, chest loadings in both front passengers were high and there was high readings in the passenger neck, which explains the zero star result.
Child occupant protection showed poor results for both child dummies in the dynamic test, explained by the poor performance of the restraint systems.
The car does not offer 3-point belts in all positions as standard and has no ISOFIX anchorages for the Child Restraint Systems (CRS).
Also, Maruti S-Presso Global NCAP tests results state that the car’s structure is unstable and even the footwell area was rated as unstable.
After the test results came, David Ward, President of the Towards Zero Foundation, rightfully stated that there is no place for zero rated cars in the Indian market.
Alejandro Furas, Secretary General of Global NCAP went further to say that it is very disappointing that Maruti Suzuki offers (cars with) such low safety performance for Indian consumers.
For the #SaferCarsForIndia project, Global NCAP currently only tests frontal crash protection for occupants and not side impact and pedestrian protection.
These very relevant safety scenarios, Global NCAP says, will form part of the future evolution of its crash test protocols in India.
Let us hope that the car’s issues are fixed and that customers are offered a safer version very soon.
