Maruti launched the S-Presso in the year 2019 with the tagline “Mini SUV”. Yes, it is mini in terms of size, but does the SUV tag hold true for this car? With its high seating position, high ground clearance, and squared-off design, it justifies up to a certain extent. Let’s do a thorough analysis to find in-depth about the S-Presso.
Pros – Pricing, Funky Interiors, Fuel Efficient, Spacious
Cons – Boxy Look, Lack Of Features, Poor Build Quality
Maruti S-Presso Exteriors
The upright pillars and high bonnet line give the S-Presso upright stance from the front. The front grille gets squarish elements inspired from its elder sibling, the Maruti Vitara Brezza. Do note that the chrome inserts in the grille and the LED DRLs are paid accessories. From the side, the car looks clean with squared-off wheel arches. The 14-inch steel wheel looks small when compared to the large wheel arches. You can also opt for the side cladding and machined alloy wheels as well. There is nothing particular about the rear with its C-shaped taillights. You can find a generous amount of cladding at back as well. The roof spoiler and skid plate are part of the optional package.
Maruti S-Presso Interiors
The S-Preeso’s central console looks like it has been inspired by the Mini Cooper. The dashboard looks nice with body-coloured inserts around the centre console and AC vents. Overall cabin quality is nice, there are hard plastics but the material quality and the overall fit-finish is good. The speedometer has been placed at the top of the centre console rather than being behind the steering wheel. There is no tachometer on offer. The digital speedometer with its large font is easy to read, but the odometer isn’t quite legible.
Below the instrument cluster, there is home to Maruti’s SmartPlay infotainment system. It supports navigation, Bluetooth, USB & AUX connectivity, steering mounted controls, and 2 speakers. Other features include manual AC with heater, remote keyless entry, front power windows, reverse parking sensors, gear shift indicator in manual transmission, and gear position indicator in automatic transmission.
Maruti S-Presso Space
The front seats are comfortable, however, because of its high seating position, and no option for height adjustment taller passengers find themselves seating too high. Rear seat experience is also quite impressive with enough amount of headroom and knee room. The flat back seat is ideal for two adults to sit comfortably.
Maruti S-Presso Engine Performance
The Maruti S-Presso comes with a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder, K10B petrol engine. The engine produces a power output of 67 HP @ 5500 RPM and torque output of 90 Nm @ 3500 RPM. The engine comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or an AMT (which Maruti likes to call AGS). Performance from this 1.0-litre engine is good. Power delivery is smooth and you don’t have to work the gearbox to get the best out of it. The 5-speed manual transmission is nice to use and you don’t have to put much efforts in shifting the gears. The clutch also feels light, and it is easy to operate. The 5-speed AMT does its job well. It feels smooth, and the time in changing the gears is also much shorter. The AMT gearbox responds to the throttle well, but for quick overtake you can find some delay to shift down. However, you can take manual control to make the gearshifts quicker.
You also get an option of CNG with the petrol engine. The engine produces a power output of 59 HP @ 5500 RPM and torque output of 78 Nm @ 3500 RPM in CNG mode. The engine comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.
Maruti S-Presso Mileage
The BS6 Maruti S-Presso with petrol engine has an ARAI fuel efficiency of 21.4-21.7 km/l for the manual transmission, and 21.7 km/l for the automatic transmission. In the real-world conditions, it will return around 15-17 km/l in city traffic conditions and 17-20 out on the highways for the manual transmission. The automatic will return around 15-18 km/l in city traffic conditions and 17-20 km/l out on the highways. However, fuel efficiency also depends upon the style of driving and traffic conditions.
The BS6 Maruti S-Presso with CNG + petrol engine has an ARAI fuel efficiency of 31.2 km/kg (CNG Mode) for the manual transmission.
Maruti S-Presso Handling
The S-Presso is an easy car to drive. With its light steering, the car is easy to twirl around. The steering weighs up but not too much and still feels light.
Maruti S-Presso Comfort
The ride quality of the S-Presso is quite impressive at low speeds. The suspension absorbs all the potholes and bumps easily. There is some amount of firmness present which is more pronounced at high speeds. At high speeds, there is some amount of movement felt.
Maruti S-Presso Safety
In terms of the safety equipment, the S-Presso is equipped with driver airbag, ABS with EBD, seat belt reminder, high-speed alert, and immobiliser as standard in all the trims. In the top-end trim you also get the passenger side airbag, central door locking, and seat belt pre-tensioner & force limiters. Note that you can opt for the passenger-side airbag as a paid package in lower trims. The Maruti S-Presso scored zero stars in the Global NCAP crash tests.
