Maruti S-Cross Petrol Launch In 2016, 1.0-Litre BoosterJet Likely

2015 Maruti S-Cross Front View

Maruti Suzuki launched the S-Cross with two diesel engines and now the company will bring in a petrol model to make the car more affordable amidst high competition.

Maruti Suzuki launched a Limited Edition of the S-Cross at the Auto Expo

The Maruti S-Cross was a turning point for India’s largest carmaker and that’s not because the crossover is a breakthrough product but because the vehicle marked the opening of the company’s new premium retail channel, NEXA. Launched with two engine options, the Maruti S-Cross gets only diesel engines as the company believed that a buyer of this segment is only looking at an oil-burner.

However, with the price gap between petrol and diesel fuels reducing, the car maker is now planning to launch a petrol model of the Maruti S-Cross. The automaker has two engines to choose from – a 1.0-litre BoosterJet engine which will debut in the Baleno RS later this year or the 1.4-litre petrol mill that already does duty on the Ertiga and Ciaz. The latter engine is cost effective.

Maruti Suzuki is likely to plonk in the BoosterJet engine in the S-Cross as the vehicle is positioned as a premium product and a powerful engine will do justice to the car. Maruti made a brave move by plonking in the imported 1.6-litre Fiat sourced diesel engine in the S-Cross which resulted in a very high price for the top variants of the crossover.

The 1.0-litre BoosterJet engine produces 110 BHP of power and 170 Nm of torque, it will also do duty on the Vitara Brezza petrol. The Maruti S-Cross petrol will be more affordable than the diesel model and will attract those buyers whose usage of the car isn’t high. The diesel models are likely to get SHVS in the near future.
