Maruti mini MPV likely to launch in 2026
Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to launch a mini MPV based on the Suzuki Spacia, set to hit the Indian market in 2026. Codenamed YDB, this three-row mini MPV will be positioned below the Maruti Ertiga and will compete with the Renault Triber.
Unlike its Japanese counterpart, the India-spec YDB MPV will undergo several modifications to cater to local preferences. While retaining its sub-four-meter dimensions, the Indian version is expected to be longer than the Japan-spec Spacia, providing ample space for seven occupants. Cost considerations might lead to the omission of sliding doors, but the boxy silhouette is likely to remain, emphasising interior spaciousness.
The compact MPV is anticipated to boast a cleverly designed three-row cabin, tailored for the Indian consumer. With an increased size compared to the Spacia, significant interior changes are expected, including an expanded features list. The focus on maximising cabin room puts it in direct competition with the Renault Triber. The presence of ottoman-like extensions on the rear seats, reminiscent of the Spacia, remains uncertain for the Indian variant.
Positioned below the popular Ertiga and XL6, the mini MPV will cater to the needs of families seeking an affordable yet spacious vehicle. Interestingly, Maruti Suzuki plans to retail the compact MPV through its premium Nexa outlets.
As a departure from the Kei car specifications of the Japan-spec Spacia, the compact MPV is expected to feature the 1.2-litre Z-Series petrol engine, making its debut on the upcoming Swift. It is expected to be offered in both manual and automatic transmission options.
