Maruti is readying up an updated version of the Alto 800 that will go on sale by the end of 2015, while the 793cc diesel motor from the Celerio could also feature on the entry-level hatchback.

The new Maruti Alto 800 petrol will get improved fuel efficiency figures with the update

Though Maruti’s current attention lies with the premium S-Cross crossover scheduled for launch next week and the establishment of NEXA dealerships; the company is silently working on updating its existing products that will be introduced during the remainder of 2015. Part of the updated products list is Maruti’s very popular Alto 800 that will not only receive technical changes to the petrol motor, but there is a possibility of a diesel motor finding its place under the hood of the entry-level small car, Renault Kwid effect?

As per a recent report, Maruti Suzuki will be introducing several innovations on the Alto 800’s 0.8-litre petrol engine in a bid to make it more fuel efficient. The hatchback currently returns an ARAI certified fuel efficiency figure of 22 km/l, which will see a stark improvement on the updated version. The report also suggests that the 793cc twin-cylinder diesel engine that made its debut on the Celerio earlier this year is likely to power the new Alto as well and will be the most affordable diesel car to go on sale in the country.

The Maruti Celerio diesel is the most fuel efficient vehicle in the country and returns an ARAI certified 27.62 km/l, and the efficiency figure could see an escalation on the Alto. Till date, Maruti Suzuki has sold over 28 lakh units of the Alto in the past decade, while sales between April to June this year accounted for 1,04,802 units. On a year-on-year basis, the company sold 34,336 units of the Alto in June 2015, as compared to 47,618 units sold during the same period last year. With a diesel heart, the Alto will see a major spike in sales, keeping its position dominant in the market.

It’s not clear as yet if the updates will include any cosmetic changes to the Alto
